A new mother will join the throngs carrying babies around the Denver Zoo in the months to come.
Today the Zoo unveiled a 6-week-old baby giant anteater, and released pictures of the baby on his mother’s back.
The baby is named Camilo, which is Latin for “child born to freedom.” His father is named Freedom and his mother is Monita.
Monita is a first-time mother, according to a statement released by the zoo.
Baby anteaters typically ride on their mother’s back for most of their first year of life, aligning their markings with their mother’s, in order to fool predators.
Camilo and his mother can be viewed at the zoo’s Primate Panorama exhibit between 9 and 11 a.m. The amount of time each day will expand as he becomes used to the habitat.
