Firestone – A man who told police he was trying to teach his 5-year-old stepson how to fire a gun shot the boy in the leg Saturday night, police said.

The boy was recovering from his wound Sunday after surgery at The Children’s Hospital in Denver. Police expect the child to survive.

Nolberto Ojeda, 29, was arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse, reckless endangerment, second-degree assault and felony possession of a firearm.

Ojeda admitted shooting the boy, Firestone Police Chief David Montgomery told 9News. Investigators are trying to determine whether the shooting was accidental.

Just after 10 p.m. Saturday, Ojeda fired several shots into an alley behind his home. One of those bullets hit the boy. Ojeda was drinking alcohol before the shooting happened, police said.

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Ojeda was arrested in February 1999 on suspicion of third-degree assault and cruelty toward a child causing bodily injury.

He pleaded guilty in that case to misdemeanor charges of third- degree assault, harassment and child abuse with injury, according to Colorado court records.

Ojeda was fined and placed on probation for two years.


WESTMINSTER

Suspect arrested after three-city chase

A man suspected of beating another man with a baseball bat took police on a 20-minute, three-city pursuit Sunday night.

The incident began when the suspect allegedly beat another man with a baseball bat at Westminster High School. An officer spotted the suspect’s car at West 72nd Avenue and Lowell Boulevard, and when the suspect refused to stop, the pursuit began.

The suspect drove southbound on Federal Boulevard, causing a crash at West 64th Avenue and Federal that injured two people. The suspect continued southbound through Denver and Wheat Ridge. He began traveling north on Wadsworth Boulevard to get onto Interstate 76 eastbound. He lost control of the car and crashed. He got out of the vehicle and ran before being arrested by Westminster police.

The suspect, Anthony Ryan, 20, was arrested and held on suspicion of second-degree assault and felony eluding.

SEDALIA

Afternoon brush fire scorches 20 acres

Firefighters responded to a brush fire near Sedalia on Sunday afternoon, calling on eight fire agencies and using three air-tanker drops to extinguish it.

It began about noon, and while the cause is unknown, firefighters do know the fire started at a private shooting range.

It burned 20 acres right off Colorado 67 before it was contained at 6 p.m. No one was injured. One home was threatened but was not damaged during the fire.

AURORA

Woman jailed in husband’s death

Aurora police suspect that a woman stabbed her husband to death during a domestic dispute early Sunday morning.

The man was identified only as a 45-year-old Aurora resident.

A woman called police from the 900 block of South Iola Street and indicated that her husband was dead. The victim’s 35-year-old wife was arrested and held on suspicion of first- degree murder.

She is being held without bail at the Aurora Detention Center.

DENVER

Confrontation ends in fatal shooting

A confrontation between two people ended Sunday afternoon when one person tried to run away and was fatally shot.

The person was shot multiple times before being found in a backyard in the 3100 block of Humboldt Street. The victim was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. Witnesses saw a car flee the scene; police stopped the vehicle two blocks away and arrested a suspect.

Denver police have not released the names or the genders of the suspect or the victim.

MESA COUNTY

Speeding suspected in motorcycle wreck

Excessive speed is considered a factor in the death of a motorcyclist who crashed into a Chevrolet Blazer at Interstate 70 Business Loop and 30 Road in Mesa County on Saturday.

The motorcycle was traveling east on the I-70 Business Loop approaching 30 Road as the Blazer was stopped facing west in the left-turn lane.

When the light turned green, the driver of the Blazer, 48-year- old Rhonda Jennings of Grand Junction, turned south and was struck by the motorcycle, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Jennings’ Blazer traveled 22 feet from the point of impact on 30 Road and rolled onto its left side.

The motorcyclist was thrown from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene. The State Patrol withheld the driver’s name until relatives were notified.

Jennings suffered moderate injuries in the crash.
