Samuel Adams OktoberFest, $7.99 a six-pack
Jim Koch loves beer. The founder and owner of Boston Beer Co. brews and markets 18 different styles, and his Sam Adams Boston Lager was one of the first handcrafted beers to gain national recognition.
He never has forgotten his German roots, which makes Samuel Adams OktoberFest an old home brew. “This, to me, is a beautiful showcase of malt,” Koch said while in Denver for the Great American Beer Festival.
OktoberFest is made with five kinds of malt but, said Koch, “It has just enough bitterness that prevents a cloying finish.” Now in its 20th year of production, it is, he pointed out, “The largest-selling Oktoberfest in the world.”
Though it’s somewhat high in alcohol at 5.5 percent (by volume), like most beers in the style it lies “fairly light on the palate,” he said.
Samuel Adams OktoberFest is expected to be on shelves through October.|samueladams.com
