Pueblo – There was plenty of fire in the twilight Thursday on the opening day of the Class 4A boys state tennis tournament as the defending champion Cheyenne Mountain Indians duked it out with Kent Denver.
A chilly drizzle delayed the start of play two hours in the morning. The hotly contested team race came down to the final match of the night as the Indians took a 12-11 lead in the point standings over the Sun Devils.
Brandon Lupo, champion at No. 1 singles as a junior, started his title defense with two easy victories Thursday. He will face Cheyenne Mountain’s Daniel Moore in today’s 9 a.m. semifinals. The three-day tourney wraps up Saturday at the City Park Tennis Complex.
Although Moore lost to Lupo in last year’s title match and has looked forward to playing the Broomfield senior again, he said he’d like to concentrate on his teammates.
“Our goal is to win state as a team,” Moore said after sweeping two matches.
Moore and the entire Cheyenne Mountain team lined up in the twilight to watch the final match of the day, the only head-to-head matchup between the Indians and Kent Denver.
The No. 4 doubles match went three sets and lasted more than an hour after every other match was over. Cheyenne Mountain’s Michael Cutter and Kevin Lynch won 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
The Indians moved all six entries into the semifinals. Kent advanced four but only one singles player. Cheyenne has the potential for more points in today’s semifinals with Moore at No. 1 and junior Brad Young at No. 2 singles. The Indians left their No. 3 player home for disciplinary reasons but put four doubles teams into the semis.
“You have to win those head-to-head matches,” Cheyenne Mountain coach Dave Adams said. “This was the third time these No. 4 doubles teams have played, and our guys have won two.”
Mullen also qualified its entire lineup to be in fourth place after the opening round.
While Lupo and Moore tangle in one semifinal, Martin Cobo, a foreign exchange student from Ecuador who attends Thompson Valley, is on the other side of the bracket.
Cobo and Lupo split two matches this season.
“I’m excited about playing in the semifinals,” Cobo said. “I’d like to make the finals against Lupo.”
