State grant gives airport a boost

Gov. Bill Owens announced Tuesday that Jefferson County has been awarded a state aviation grant of nearly $195,000 for improvements at the Jefferson County Airport.

The money will be combined with $5.7 million in federal and local dollars to move taxiways and maintain pavement.

“This will allow us to stretch our dollars,” said Commissioner Kevin McCasky, by freeing up the dollars the county would have spent on those projects for use on other projects.

Northern forests get new overseer

Glenn Casamassa has been named the next supervisor of the Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland in northern Colorado.

He replaces Jim Bedwell, who moved to Washington, D.C., to become director of recreation for the agency.

“Glenn’s passion for working with natural resources and with people make him a great fit for his new position,” said Rocky Mountain regional forester Rick Cables.

Casamassa began working with the agency in Alaska in 1982, has served in three Utah national forests and since 2003 has worked on the agency’s legislative-affairs staff in Washington.
