Lakewood’s Shawn Nichol and two-time national champions Demetrius Andrade and Karl Dargan were among the fighters who won Sunday at the Pan American Box-offs in Colorado Springs and earned a chance to go to the Pan American Games.
Nichol won on a walkover at 112 pounds when Qa’id Muhammad of Ventnor City, N.J., didn’t receive medical clearance to box because of a cold. The 18-year-old Nichol has had difficulty maintaining the weight, and may forgo the Pan Am Games experience. Nichol will make a decision within the next few days. If he opts out, Muhammad will take the 112-pound berth.
