The Denver Post’s website is a finalist in three categories in the Online News Association’s annual competition, including general excellence.
The Post also was nominated for its breaking-news coverage of December’s blizzards in Colorado and the online commentary of business columnist Al Lewis.
The Post’s blizzards breaking-news nomination pits it against Virginia Tech massacre coverage from the Associated Press, CNN and the New York Times. The fifth entry in the category is the Orlando Sentinel’s coverage of deadly tornadoes.
In the general-excellence category, the Post is competing with the websites of other mid-size publications, such as the Des Moines Register, Toronto’s Globe and Mail, and the Oklahoma City Oklahoman.
In online commentary, Al Lewis was nominated along with Newsday’s Walt Handelsman, Delaware Online’s “Pulp Culture” blog and Tampa Bay’s “Stuck in the ’80s” feature.
“The range of finalists this year demonstrates the remarkable diversity in online journalism and the ever-growing number of sites producing first-rate content,” said ONA president Kinsey Wilson. “From established brands to small community startups, we’re seeing great work at every level.”
The 2007 Online Journalism Award winners will be announced at ONA’s October convention in Toronto. This is the prestigious contest’s eighth year.
