Exercise is recommended as one of the things that helps prevent osteoporosis in women and men, but a new study has found that even men aged 20-59 who are competitive cyclists have an increased incidence of osteopenia, a type of low bone density that is less severe than osteoporosis.
The study by the University of Missouri found that weight-bearing activities such as jogging, running or jumping rope are better than cycling or swimming for preventing osteopenia, which affects more than 12 million men.
Two million men have osteoporosis, and both conditions often go undiagnosed and untreated in men.
