A police officer was taken to a Denver hospital at about 2:30 p.m. today after his horse fell on him, said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Jackson said the officer, part of the Denver Police Department’s mounted patrol, was conscious when he was taken from the scene at 14th Avenue and Mariposa Street in Lincoln Park.

Jackson said the officer suffered injuries to his legs and torso but they appear to be non-life threatening.

“He is being evaluated,” the spokesman said.

Jackson said that the officer was on the horse when the animal apparently lost its footing on slippery ground in the park and fell.

“The horse was taken back to the barn,” Jackson said. “The horse didn’t appear to have any major injuries.”

He added that the horses used by officers are large animals.

“That’s a lot of weight,” he said.

The officer was riding in tandem with another officer and horse.

“It is fortunate that the injuries weren’t more serious,” Jackson said.Howard Pankratz: 303-954-1939 or hpankratz@denverpost.com
