BROOKINGS, S.D. — Kai Williams had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Ben Beran added 12 points to lead South Dakota State to a 56-52 victory over Denver on Tuesday.

Williams was 8-for-14 from the field for the Jackrabbits (5-6), including 5-of-7 shooting on 3-pointers.

Freshman Rob Lewis gave the Pioneers (3-6) a two-point lead with 1:30 remaining in the game, but Jackrabbits guard Garrett Callahan made a 3-pointer 17 seconds later, and South Dakota State made 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.

“We played tough and gritty and did some things right,” Pioneers coach Joe Scott said, “but our mistakes in the first half came back to haunt us in the second half.”

Joe Jackson led the Pioneers with 15 points, while Lewis finished with 14.

  • ATLANTA – Russell Robinson scored 17 points, becoming the Jayhawks’ seventh different leading scorer in 11 games, and Kansas (11-0), which led by 13 points with five minutes remaining, survived a last-minute scare.

After Georgia Tech cut the Kansas lead to one point with nine seconds left, Sherron Collins made two free throws and then had a steal and layup to clinch the victory.

“I expected it to be a close game, but I didn’t expect it to go down to the wire when we were up 13,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “We certainly hurt ourselves late not being able to put the game away with missed free throws.”
