An 89-year-old man caused a three-car crash on Interstate 25 in Pueblo yesterday when he headed north in the southbound lanes, according to the Pueblo Police Department.

Emil Roberts of Pueblo died from his injuries at Parkview Hospital about two hours after the accident. His 1992 Buick collided head-on with a GMC box truck driven by Eileen Garcia, 46, of Colorado Springs. She was treated and released with minor injuries.

Garcia’s passenger, Samuel Martinez, 49, of Pueblo sustained serious spinal injuries, police said.

Another motorist, 29-year-old Eric O’Brien of Aurora, was southbound behind Garcia’s truck when he swerved his 2007 Chevrolet Impala into the median to avoid the initial collision. O’Brien was uninjured.

The accident happened about 9:36 a.m. in the 5100 block of I-25. Roberts had no passengers. He got on the interstate in the wrong direction from U.S. 50.
