A 70-year-old man hiking with his wife in Rocky Mountain National Park collapsed and died today, the second death in the park this week.

Robert Bacon’s death near Alberta Falls was the result of a medical condition, said Maury Miller, an investigator for the Larimer County coroner’s office.

“Judging by his medical history, it is probably cardiac related,” Miller said.

A visitor to the park contacted rangers by cellphone at 11:05 a.m. and told them that the St. Louis, Mo., man was unconscious but breathing, according to a release.

A second caller followed saying the man had stopped breathing and had no pulse.

Visitors, including a physician who was hiking, were administering CPR to the man when a ranger/emergency medical technician arrived at 11:40 a.m.

Efforts to revive him went on for almost 90 minutes, and he was pronounced dead at 12:28 p.m.

A 66-year-old man from Fort Collins died from a fall near Emerald Lake last Saturday.
