A woman kidnapped eight days earlier in Fort Collins turned up unharmed Sunday night at the home of her alleged kidnapper’s parents in Loveland.
Travis John Kness, 32, disappeared again after he left his ex-girlfriend, Rosanna Martinez, 45, with his parents at about 7:20 p.m.
Kness abducted the woman at gunpoint as she was getting off work at the Dollar Tree store on College Avenue in Fort Collins on July 19.
Police said Martinez was a passenger in a co-worker’s car when Kness pulled up alongside it in the store’s parking lot, fired a shot in the air and ordered Martinez into his late-1990s white Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The two stopped dating about eight months ago, police have said.
Kness has a history of mental problems and is thought to be hiding in the immediate area of Loveland or Fort Collins, police said.
He considers himself an outdoors survivalist, police have said.
Anyone who sees him is being asked to call 911.
Kness’ Grand Cherokee has Colorado license plate FHX-5828.
Kness is white, 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He had long brown hair at the time of the abduction.
Neither Kness nor Martinez are known to have contacted relatives or friends since the abduction. A dozen Fort Collins detectives were working the case as of late last week.
Authorities said more information would be available today once they have interviewed Martinez about her captivity.
Kness has had numerous bizarre run-ins with the law.
He was arrested in January by Loveland police after he terrorized patrons at Scotty O’Brian’s Bar by shouting profanities and waving around what turned out to be a BB gun. Kness pleaded guilty to menacing and received two years of probation.
He had just been released by police from a mental-health hold because of irrational behavior.
His arrest record also includes charges of fondling a 17-year-old girl in Foothills Fashion Mall in Fort Collins in 2003. He served 41 days in jail.
In 1998 he was convicted of the stalking of another ex-girlfriend.
