KINGSFORD, Mich. — The Michigan man suspected of ambushing a swimming hangout last week might have snapped after police began investigating him for sexual assault, the man’s mother said Sunday.
A 24-year-old woman told police that Scott Johnson, 38, sexually assaulted her Wednesday at the spot where the shooting occurred a day later.
The man’s mother, Judy Johnson, said her son was once a carefree father of two who became introverted after his wife left him seven years ago and took their children to Ohio.
Police gave her their business card Thursday afternoon and asked her to have her son call them, she said.
Scott Johnson returned a few hours later. She gave her son the card, and he said he would take care of it and walked out, she said. She said he was probably “freaked out” over police interest in him.
According to police, Scott Johnson went to a nearby swimming hole and opened fire. Three teens were killed, and a 20-year-old was injured.
Johnson hasn’t been charged with sexual assault. Authorities have said they don’t know whether he has an attorney yet.
