Entering the Beijing Games, the U.S. softball team had one Olympic no-hitter in its history. Now the U.S. has three, including a perfect game. Earlier in these Games, Cat Osterman pitched a no-no, and Abbott tossed a perfect game Sunday against the Netherlands in a five-inning, 8-0 rout.

Abbott, a native of Salinas, Calif., struck out nine batters.

The U.S. hitters gave her plenty of support by slugging three home runs — giving the team 12 so far, a record for the Olympics. American Crystl Bustos was 3-for-3, including a homer.

Abbott has a history of out- doing Osterman. Osterman had the NCAA record for strikeouts, which she set at Texas, until Tennessee’s Abbott surpassed her mark in 2007.
