LINCOLN, Neb.—Costs are escalating in the Nebraska fight over affirmative action.
New campaign finance reports show that the Nebraska Civil Rights Initiative, which is sponsoring the proposed ban on most types of affirmative action, has raised $644,000. They’ve spent $634,000.
Nebraskans United, the group opposing the ban, has raised $392,000 and spent $380,000.
The numbers come from the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission.
The measure would bar the state from considering race or gender in any spending or decisions, including college admissions. Similar measures have been passed in California, Michigan and Washington state, and a similar measure is on Colorado ballots this fall.
