Getting your player ready...

BOSTON — Casey Weathers, the Rockies’ strong-armed reliever and No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft, is facing Tommy John surgery and likely will be out 12-15 months, according to a source close to the player.

Weathers suffered a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during a game in the Arizona Fall League last Thursday. He had an MRI on Monday. Results Tuesday confirmed the seriousness of the injury. He will likely need ligament replacement surgery, commonly referred to as Tommy John surgery, meaning he would miss the 2009 season.

Weathers, selected eighth overall out of Vanderbilt, pitched at Double-A Tulsa in 2008, played in the Futures Game during all-star weekend and was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team.
