BOULDER — A Boulder man who mysteriously disappeared for 16 days only to reappear with a gun and a bottle of wine was suffering from amnesia caused by depression, his wife said Friday.
James McPhee, 34, is currently receiving treatment for what his wife called “a fugue state brought on by depression.”
“It’s when the brain shuts down into amnesia,” said Jessica Hersh, McPhee’s wife and mother of their two young children. “It’s a dissociative state when you are out of your head. It can happen to anyone, which is why we are going public.”
McPhee vanished Oct. 5 after dropping off some DVDs at the Boulder Public Library. On Tuesday, he knocked on a citizen’s door, holding a bottle of wine and a gun. He was unharmed but remembered nothing.
