DENVER—Denver’s South High School is dropping its “Johnny Rebel” logo after a groundswell of objections from students who said it has racist implications.

The Denver School Board on Thursday granted students’ request to replace the Confederate soldier’s profile with the image of a griffin, a mythical beast with a lion’s body and an eagle’s head and wings.

The new image was taken from a griffin perched over the main entrance of the school.

South’s teams will still be called the Rebels.

Principal Bill Kohut estimated it will cost $15,000 to replace or conceal the Johnny Rebel logos at South High and at the 10 Denver Public Schools gyms where all the district’s high school emblems are displayed.
