AZTEC, N.M.—San Juan County sheriff’s deputies say a tire that came loose from a trailer bounced over a highway divider and went through the windshield of a northbound vehicle, killing the passenger.

The accident happened Friday afternoon as Phillip Bryson, 51, of Durango, Colo., and his passenger were driving on U.S. 550 north of Aztec.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies were withholding his name pending notification of relatives.

The driver that was hauling the trailer, 34-year-old Ronnie Jacquez of Bloomfield, was heading south when the two left front tires came off the trailer. The trailer was attached to a welding truck owned by Moberg Welding of Bloomfield.

Deputies say several motorists witnessed the accident.
