GREELEY, Colo.—A 21-year-old Greeley man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for stabbing another man seven times and biting off the tip of his nose.

Court records say Nicholas Bateman was arrested in July after stabbing Zack Sandoval in a fight over money. Witnesses said both men were “highly intoxicated” when the fight occurred.

Sandoval was in court Tuesday but didn’t testify.

Judge Marcelo Kopcow noted Bateman’s criminal record, which included arrests for theft, assault and drug possession. He then told Bateman, “You were put on probation last year for breaking into a number of cars, and six weeks later you stabbed Mr. Sandoval seven times. You’ve earned yourself a prison sentence.”

Bateman also was given three years for the probation violation, to be served concurrently with his eight-year sentence.
