The Senate briefly debated a bill Thursday that would encourage liquor sellers to post signs warning that consumption of alcohol during pregnancy may cause birth defects.

The debate was delayed until today so amendments could be worked on.

“I’m going to propose an amendment that they post a sign that says, ‘Drinking alcohol may result in pregnancy,’ ” said Sen. Al White, R- Hayden.

Amid prompting, I pledge not to forget the words

Every day in the Senate, a lawmaker is called on to lead the chamber in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Senate President pro tem Betty Boyd, D-Lakewood, on Thursday called on Sen. White, who takes a fair amount of ribbing, to perform the honors.

“Teleprompter!” called out Sen. Bill Cadman, R-Colorado Springs.

Beef, it should be what’s for dinner

Senate sticking up for sense of decorum

Speaker Carroll earlier issued an edict that lobbyists, reporters, the governor’s staff and other no- accounts should start addressing representatives by their titles — Rep. Such and Such — instead of first names.

It turns out the Senate’s got some decorum too.

An insurance lobbyist handed a message card to sergeant-at-arms Dan Erickson to give to Sen. Moe Keller, D-Wheat Ridge. Erickson handed it back.

“This has to say ‘Sen. Keller,’ not ‘Moe,’ ” he instructed.

Floor fine feeds a fine cause

$10 Fine imposed on Sen. Mike Kopp, R-Littleton, for jokingly trying to get away with introducing a non family member on the Senate floor.

He wanted to recognize Donna Hilton, manager for corporations and grants at Food Bank of the Rockies, so he said she was his twin sister. That got a big laugh, as Hilton is black and Kopp is white. The fine was donated to the Food Bank.
