COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs officials backed away from a proposal that would’ve let residents shoot and kill coyotes.

The Colorado Springs City Council did not take an official vote on the measure Monday but instead decided not to debate the issue at all, saying they had more pressing matters.

The former councilwoman who pitched the idea to allow residents to kill aggressive coyotes agreed with officials and said she thought the measure was too broad and was not written the way she wanted. Former Councilwoman Margaret Radford says the proposal should be revised so that coyotes are killed only as a last resort.

The proposal would have allowed people to shoot aggressive coyotes with a special permit and only with a .22-caliber firearm.

Animal activists opposed the idea.
