BOSTON — Struggling Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a shoulder strain and could be sidelined much longer.
“This is not going to be a two-week DL,” manager Terry Francona said.
In eight starts, Matsuzaka is 1-5 with an 8.23 ERA, and opponents are hitting .378 against him. Last season, he was 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA and a major league-best .211 batting average by opponents.
Phillies slugger out of hospital
PHILADELPHIA — Ryan Howard was released from the hospital but did not play for the Phillies against Baltimore, ending his consecutive games streak at 343.
Howard was hospitalized Saturday for the second time in two nights with flu symptoms.
The 2006 NL MVP had played in every Phillies game since May 25, 2007, the longest active streak in the majors.
Span on rehab.
Twins outfielder Denard Span is set to make two rehab appearances at Triple-A Rochester and be activated from the disabled list Thursday.

Braves manager Bobby Cox, third baseman Chipper Jones and pitcher Eric O’Flaherty were ejected by plate umpire Bill Hohn in Boston.
