COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Testimony has begun in a new trial for a Colorado Springs man convicted of a 2003 drug-related killing.

Shannon Dean Merrow is getting a new trial because of a jury error in his original trial. He is accused of shooting and killing 22-year-old Anthony Aragon in 2003 over a drug debt.

In opening arguments Tuesday, prosecutors said that Merrow killed Aragon in a remote field because he suspected Aragon stole drugs from him.

The 35-year-old Merrow was serving a life sentence for the killing when his appeals for a new trial were granted. Two other men have also been convicted in the Aragon killing, but they do not have new trials.
