CHICAGO — David Wright is ready to get back on the field with the Mets, two weeks after he was hit in the helmet by a fastball from Giants pitcher Matt Cain.
Wright, on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion, is expected to be activated Tuesday before the opener of a three-game series against the Rockies.
Mets manager Jerry Manuel said he would take it day by day with Wright, gauging his condition after each game.
“It comes down to him wanting to look out for my best interest,” Wright said. “He knows I want to play and I know he wants to look out for me. We’ll discuss it.”
Gonzalez calls it quits
PHOENIX — A teary Luis Gonzalez announced his retirement as a player and rejoined the Diamondbacks as a special assistant in the front office.
Gonzalez played with the Marlins last season and finished his 18-year career with 354 home runs and 2,591 hits.
Arizona recalled outfielder Chris Young and placed catcher Chris Snyder on the 15-day DL with lower back pain and recalled left-handed reliever Daniel Schlereth, who attended Highlands Ranch High School, from Triple-A Reno.
Kuroda is on the mend
CINCINNATI — Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda, who was hit by line drive in a game against Arizona on Aug. 15, could begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment this week.

• Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner missed the game against the Orioles with soreness in his left shoulder, an injury that could keep him sidelined for several days.
• Mariners first baseman Russell Branyan, was placed on the 15-day DL because of a herniated disc in his back.
