Terry Herbert, an amateur treasure hunter prowling English farmland with a metal detector, stumbled upon the largest Anglo-Saxon treasure ever found, a 7th-century hoard of more than 1,500 gold and silver sword decorations, crosses and other items, British archaeologists said Thursday.

The Staffordshire Hoard, on display at the Birmingham Museum, includes assorted treasures; a hilt fitting; and a mangled gold cross.
