DENVER—A man convicted of stealing more than $11 million in unclaimed tax refunds with help from an ex-girlfriend who was a state tax supervisor has been sentenced to 58 years in prison.

Hysear Randell also was ordered Thursday to pay almost $11.9 million in restitution.

Randell’s ex-girlfriend, Michelle Cawthra, who was a supervisor at the Colorado Department of Revenue, had testified that during the scheme, she deposited unclaimed tax refunds and other money in Randell’s bank accounts by forging documents and creating fake businesses.

Cawthra was sentenced earlier to 24 years in prison after pleading guilty to racketeering. Randell’s wife, Trudy, was accused of helping to create the bank accounts. She was sentenced to probation.
