FORT RILEY, Kan.—An Army specialist with the 1st Infantry Division has been named the 2009 Soldier of the Year.

Spec. Clancey Henderson, an intelligence analyst from Longmont, Colo., won the competition held Sept. 28 through Oct. 3 at Fort Lee, Va. He defeated 11 other finalists who competed in combatives, interviews, physical fitness, written exams and urban warfare simulations.

The 1st Infantry Division is headquartered at Fort Riley.

During the physical fitness portion, Henderson set a record for the 2-mile run, covering the distance in 10 minutes, 26 seconds.

He has been in the Army for two years and is assigned to the 193rd Support Battalion of the division’s 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade based at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
