MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — Former guerrilla Jose “Pepe” Mujica easily got the most votes in Uruguay’s presidential race, but exit polls suggest he failed to win the majority needed to avoid a runoff.

The exit polls suggest Mujica got about 48 percent of the votes Sunday, far more than former President Luis Alberto LaCalle with about 30 percent. He needs at least 50 percent support to avoid a one-on-one runoff election Nov. 29.
