Lawmakers took their first shot late Monday at settling the long- standing dispute over rafts passing private property when they passed out of committee a bill to give commercial outfitters the right to float on rivers without the fear of being sued by landowners for trespassing.
In hours of testimony, a state House committee heard from concerned riverfront property owners, lawyers seeking to make the law clear and rafting advocates touting the economic benefits of their industry to mountain communities.
A bipartisan 7-3 vote sent the bill to the full House.
