A Denver woman was duped out of $1,900 last week when a man claiming to be a University of Denver student selling magazines persuaded her to withdraw the money from her bank account.

Denver police said Thursday that the man approached the woman at South High Street and East Evans Avenue on April 14.

He said he was selling magazines for a broadcasting and journalism class and showed the woman an identification that depicted him as a DU student, police said in a statement. He told her she could cancel the subscription for a refund later but that the school would accept only cash. “After she gave the suspect the money, she checked with the school about the program and learned the school was not doing a magazine-subscription fundraiser,” police said in a statement. “The student identification was a fake.”

Anyone with information about the man could qualify for a $2,000 reward by contacting Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 or , or by texting CRIMES (274637). The Denver Post
