
A driver who caused a chain of traffic collisions on East Colfax Avenue Tuesday was identified this morning, and he faces multiple charges, including drinking and driving, police said.
Jerrad Lowell Leonard, 27, of Commerce City, drove an SUV hitting 80 mph along a 10-block stretch of Colfax at about 7:15 p.m., hitting multiple vehicles and injuring at least six people, including himself, Denver police said.
Among the cars hit was a Denver police patrol car at Fillmore Street. The patrol car had a suspect in the back seat who was among the injured.
After hitting the patrol car, the driver sped on, hitting a car at Williams Street and then slamming into the back of a Honda sedan west of Gilpin Street.
Details on the injuries were not available.
The officer who was driving the patrol car was not hurt.
Leonard faces possible charges including driving without a valid license, driving with no insurance, reckless driving, failing to stop and report an accident and DUI, police said.
According to Colorado Bureau of Investigation and state court records, Leonard has a lengthy history of driving violations dating to 2000.
