Divers recovered a woman’s body Saturday evening from a canal near Loveland after she died while trying to save a puppy that had jumped into the water.
Authorities had not yet released the name of the woman, believed to be in her early 20s.
Loveland Fire and Rescue Operations Chief Ned Sparks said the accident happened shortly before 3 p.m. as the woman and a friend were walking near the Charles Hansen Feeder Canal west of Loveland. The woman’s dog apparently jumped into the water and she followed the dog in an attempt to save it. The puppy made it out of the canal safely, but the woman was swept away in the current. Her friend sought help. Sparks said the water was about 40 degrees and 5 feet deep.
Divers from Loveland Fire and Rescue, the Berthoud Fire Protection District and the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office recovered the woman’s body about 7 p.m., he said.
