With the return of University of Colorado students for the fall semester comes the return of couches, chairs, tables and desks being piled up in alleys, front yards, on porches and in city streets.
But Boulder officials are reminding residents on University Hill that city code prohibits them from placing indoor furniture in their yard or on their porch. Violators can be fined $100 for a first offense, and city spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said officials have ticketed four people for violating the “sofa ordinance” so far this year.
That is slightly higher than in previous years — just one ticket was issued in both 2008 and 2009, and two tickets were issued in 2007.
One of the main reasons authorities don’t want people leaving furniture in their yards or in the street is because passers-by, late at night, tend to light them on fire.
