A 17-year-old boy who was babysitting the day his toddler cousin was found unconscious in a bathtub has been charged with child abuse resulting in death.

The boy, who was not identified because of his age, was charged as a juvenile, said Denver District Attorney’s spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough.

“The allegations are that he went to sleep and when he woke up the 11-month-old was unconscious in a bath tub that was nearly full of water,” Kimbrough said.

The incident happened on Sept. 7 at 1095 S. Quivas St., the home of the 11-month-old victim, police said. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner identified the victim as Anahi Juarez-Gonzalez.

Her family spelled her name “Anahy.”

Family members of the girl described the death was accidental.
