FORT LUPTON — Budget woes have the city of Fort Lupton looking at eliminating its police department and transferring the duties to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

City Administrator Mike Konefal told Denver’s 9News that all the departments have been scrutinized for ways to cut costs. Fort Lupton is considering contracting with the Sheriff’s Office to respond to emergency calls and investigate crimes.

The Sheriff’s Office has similar contracts with four other communities.
