College basketball season officially began Saturday for hoops-crazed Kansas, with another sellout for Midnight Madness, or as Jayhawks fans like to call it, “Late Night in the Phog.” At one point, coach Bill Self walked onto the floor dressed as Vanilla Ice, wearing all gold and a hat on backward. “Yo, Allen Fieldhouse, what’s up tonight?” he said. “Tonight, for 26 years in a row we’ve packed the fieldhouse for Late Night. It shows why this is the best place to play and the best place to coach in America.” The school has turned the event into a Las Vegas light show, with lasers, smoke and pulsating music.
