PARIS — Qatar’s neighboring countries could host games at the 2022 World Cup, according to FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

Qatar was designated the 2022 World Cup last week, despite concerns the intense heat poses a serious health risk if the tournament is played in summer.

On Thursday, Blatter said Australia’s 2022 World Cup bid proposed some matches could be held in New Zealand, and Qatar could have neighboring countries host games. He didn’t say which countries.

“Australia, in its candidacy bid, proposed to give several matches to New Zealand,” Blatter said. “I think it could be the same in Qatar and that some matches could take place in nearby countries.”

Qatar also beat out the United States, Japan and South Korea.

Daly balloons to 83 in Coolum

COOLUM, Australia — Just when John Daly thought it was safe to return to Coolum, the scene of one of his most famous meltdowns, the course came back to get him again.

Daly shot an 11-over-par 83 today in the Australian PGA to miss the cut. He opened with a 71.

In 2002, Daly was fined and disqualified after failing to sign his scorecard and throwing his ball and putter into a pond on the 18th hole at Coolum.

Daly refused to speak to media after his round and was driven from the course by the tournament promoter.

Lydia Hall of Wales shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Anna Nordqvist of Sweden (68—138) after the second round of the Dubai Ladies Masters in the United Arab Emirates.

Anthony Michael of South Africa shot a 6-under 66 to lead after the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship, the opening European Tour tournament, in Malelane, South Africa.

England’s Robert Rock, Germany’s Sebastian Buhl, Norway’s Marius Thorp and South Africa’s Dawie van der Walt shot 67s.
