DELTA, Colo.—Three Delta officers were justified in using deadly force against a man officers say had fired shots at them, according to a report by the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.

The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction reports Larry Brown died Oct. 23 during a confrontation with officers, who answered a report of a man with a gun and shots fired.

Officers Ardean Young and Todd Huff say they ordered Brown to show his hands, but he began firing a .45-caliber handgun at them. Jean Woodford, serving as district attorney for the 7th Judicial District, concluded that the officers were justified in returning fire.

Brown’s brother-in-law, Carl Nation, says the shooting was unprovoked and alleges a cover up. He says the family has consulted an attorney.
