
Aspen to Basalt trek.
The third annual Town-to-Town tour will be Jan. 22. This tour is the only long-distance, noncompetitive Nordic event of the year and raises funds to be used for trail-building and conservation projects on public lands. It begins at 10 a.m. at the Rio Grande Plaza in Aspen and finishes in downtown Basalt. Participants can either snowshoe or cross-country ski the 18-mile trail. Steamboat Winter Carnival.
The 98th annual Winter Carnival will take place Feb. 2-6 in Steamboat Springs. Traditionally an excuse to shake off cabin fever, this event has turned into a celebration of all things winter. Activities include ski-jumping competitions, a tubing party, the Diamond Hitch Parade and a fireworks display. or 970-879-0880
Snow geese visit Lamar.
The High Plains Snow Goose Festival will be Feb. 24-27 in Lamar. The event gives visitors an opportunity to watch snow geese as they flock back to their Canadian Arctic nesting grounds. Food, exhibits, bird walks, tours, arts and crafts, and seminars will be available. or 719-336-4379
Exploring Legacy Ranch.
Join a Yampatika naturalist for an easy snowshoe tour on the historic Legacy Ranch in the Steamboat Springs area. Originally homesteaded by a woman and now occupied by Yampatika, a nonprofit organization, the ranch has stories about Ute Indians, pioneers and the environment.
