A house in the Littleton foothills exploded and burned to the ground tonight, Jefferson County authorities said.
The approximately 4,000 square-foot home at 19052 Timber Falls Trail erupted in a “large explosion” heard for several miles at about 5:35 p.m., said Inter-Canyon Fire/Rescue Spokesman Daniel Hatlestad. Hatlestad said fire crews found the home “completely destroyed” when they arrived.
The explosion scattered debris over a 100-yard radius and ignited several small grassfires, which Hatlestad said firefighters quickly extinguished.
Inter-Canyon personnel are searching the wreckage, but do not believe anyone was in the house when it exploded. The homeowner was not home at the time, Hatlestad said.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
