COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado’s recent warm weather has some black bears stirring from their dens a little earlier than usual, prompting state wildlife officials to urge people to give the bruins wide berth.
The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports there have been some sightings of black bears roaming in the mountains. The Colorado Division of Wildlife says residents have reported seeing a mother bear and two cubs wandering in northeast Colorado Springs.
Division spokesman Randy Hampton says most bears end hibernation in late April to early May, but individuals might leave their dens sooner. He says warmer weather is probably contributing to some bears waking up earlier.
Wildlife officials say people shouldn’t leave out trash or pet food that will attract bears. Bear-human conflicts often end with the bear being relocated or euthanized.
