A fire that swept through two Arvada homes caused the evacuation of 15 nearby residences and injured two firefighters early Sunday morning.
The Arvada Fire Protection District responded to multiple 911 calls at about 4:30 a.m., and firefighters found 6555 and 6565 Union St. ablaze.
“Firefighters had to fight heavy winds when they arrived,” said Arvada firefighting spokesman Scott Pribble.
Heavy smoke, the potential for the fire to spread and a natural-gas leak associated with the blaze led to the evacuations.
Eight people who were inside the scorched homes escaped safely. Two firefighters were transported to a hospital, where they were reported in stable condition after suffering burns to their upper extremities. Both are expected to recover fully.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
