
Interstate 70 has reopened in the high country tonight, after a trucker was hit in a chain-up area near Vail at about 7:30 p.m.
The truck driver’s name and condition have not been released.
The interstate reopened early after being closed most of the afternoon because of heavy snow and high wind,according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
“It’s just very hazardous driving conditions,” CDOT spokeswoman Stacey Stegman said this afternoon. Stegman said the roads are icy and the visibility is poor, with drivers crashing or pulling off the road.
U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass, U.S. 550 at Red Mountain, U.S. 160 at Walshand U.S. 40 between Hayden and Milner remain closed because of the weather, according to CDOT.
A winter storm warning remains in effect for the northern and central mountains until midnight.
Forecasters expect the region to receive 10 inches to 18 inches of snow driven by wind gusts of up to 65 mph this afternoon, decreasing to about 45 mph by evening.
Snow is expected to continue into the evening in the mountains and along the Front Range.
Denver should receive about an inch, in total, from the storm, according to the National Weather Service.
Sunny skies return to the metro area Monday, with a high of 52, followed by a forecast high of 71 for Tuesday, forecasters said.
