BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder high school students are teaming up with New Era Colorado to try to ban the use of plastic bags in grocery stores and shopping centers.
The Daily Camera reported Thursday that the high school environmental club Net Zero and the nonprofit political action group pitched the idea of a plastic bag ban or fee to Boulder leaders. Officials say they are researching the issue and will return to the topic at the end of June.
Officials at New Era said plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes but take 1,000 years to degrade. They said other cities like Washington, D.C., and Telluride have similar initiatives.
Telluride officials say the city has banned the use of plastic bags and charges a 10-cent fee for paper bags.
