CASTLE ROCK, Colo.—Douglas County commissioners have given preliminary approval to a project that would add 12,050 housing units south of Chatfield State Park, though some residents have expressed concerns about water and traffic.
The Denver Post reports commissioners gave their preliminary approval Wednesday to the Sterling Ranch project. The approval is subject to technical corrections in the plan, which is scheduled for a ratification vote May 31. Developers hope to start building homes in 2013.
The $4.3 billion project is being built in an area where groundwater is depleting.
Sterling Ranch officials say they have secured enough water rights for the first phase of the project. They say they also plan to harvest rain water, use conservation measures, and build water systems and infrastructure to supply water.
