FORT COLLINS — Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck will serve as a special prosecutor should charges be filed against former Larimer County GOP Chairman Larry Carillo.
Larimer County District Attorney Larry Abrahamson asked Wednesday that Buck take over as special prosecutor because Abrahamson has a conflict of interest in the case, said Larimer DA spokeswoman Linda Jensen.
“District Attorney Larry Abrahamson has made financial contributions to the Larimer County Republican Party, and Larry Carillo became chairman of the organization soon after the district attorney election” of 2008, Jensen said in a statement.
The Larimer County GOP have asked the Fort Collins Police to investigate possible mismanagement of funds by Carillo while he was chairman. The organization contacted police after reviewing records turned over by Carillo after he resigned in March.
Police are still working on their investigation, said Jensen.
The Colorado secretary of state is also reviewing whether to fine the Larimer GOP for failing to file required campaign finance reports. The party currently faces a $48,700 fine for not filing any of its 2010 finance reports.
However, Secretary of State Scott Gessler probably won’t make any decision on fines until the police complete their probe, according to the office.
