DENVER—Strong winds caused by thunderstorms in the Denver area and on Colorado’s eastern plains have delayed traffic at the Denver airport and prompted warnings of damaging gusts.
Denver International Airport officials say departing and arriving flights were delayed for about a half hour Wednesday afternoon because of wind shear and microbursts spawned by the storms.
Colorado Springs Airport officials tell The Gazette that 22 flights were diverted there because of the “ground stop” in Denver, which prevented planes from landing or taking off.
The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for several counties in eastern Colorado and spots in north-central Colorado. Forecasters say winds of up to 60 mph were reported in Steamboat Springs Wednesday.
