Heavy traffic kept law enforcement and road crews busy this holiday weekend as travelers flocked out of the metro area and into the mountains.
A total of 163,955 vehicles passed through the Eisenhower Tunnel during the Fourth of July weekend, down from the 177,371 that passed through during the holiday weekend in 2010, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The heaviest traffic this year was on Friday when 46,331 vehicles passed through the tunnel, 30,180 of them were traveling westbound.
On Saturday, 42,785 vehicles passed through the tunnel, 39,513 on Sunday and 35,326 vehicles went through on Monday.
The Colorado State Patrol reported four fatal accidents during the weekend.
During the same period weekend last year, there were 10 fatal accidents, five of them related to alcohol, CDOT said.
As of this morning there were 263 reported arrests for driving under the influence over the holiday weekend, according to CDOT. Last year, police made a total of 620 arrests for DUI over the same period.
